Unique and Famous Landscape Photographers

by Tony Brezzelli Leave a Comment

The following artists are all famous landscape photographers who each share an immense talent and natural ability to capture the world from a unique and interesting perspective.

Anyone who knows anything about landscape photography understands how challenging it can be. In order to “get it right” and photograph the scene exactly as intended, is in fact a tremendous skill.

That’s precisely why these famous landscape photographers mentioned here are so famous along with inspiring many novice photographers as well.

Ansel Adams

1. Ansel Adams

Born just after the turn of the century in 1902, Ansel Adams is likely the most well-known artist in the realm of famous landscape photographers.

You may be surprised to know that Adams originally aspired to be a professional concert pianist before his true passion for photography blossomed and led him down a much different path.

That change of direction was a great benefit to the world since he went on to create a vast, spectacular portfolio of the amazing Californian countryside.

His legendary pictures of the striking Yosemite National Park scenery indeed captured the splendor of it all while also calling attention to the significance of conservationism.

Besides creating a large number of very prominent photographs, Adams established the “zone system” for producing black and white prints with the most optimized tonal range possible.

Galen Rowell

Galen Rowell’s amazing career in photography involved his unique ability to capture the remarkable light, textures, colors, and scale of the surrounding mountains.

He was one of many well respected famous landscape photographers and considered an ardent mountain climber among the climbing community circle as well.

Rowell was known as a man who possessed an incredible gift to express the pure joy of what it was like to be atop a mountain through his photography.

Tragically, Rowell died too soon at age 62 in a plane crash. However, he left behind an amazing collection of work that inspires and motivates people yet today.

Edward Weston

Edward Weston was known as a tremendously talented and productive genius among famous landscape photographers. Born in 1886, he grew up in Chicago and maintained his fascination and desire for photography as a very young boy.

Once he moved to California, he became the foremost proponent of the pictorial, photography school which strived to imitate the beauty of a painting in a photograph.

However, he soon discovered how restricting this was on the role of photography and subsequently devoted himself to taking clearer, sharper, more realistic pictures.

Although Weston was attracted to many subjects, he undoubtedly turned out to be one of the greatest and famous landscape photographers ever known due to his stunning shots of the spectacular vistas that framed his Californian home.

Luca Campigotto

Luca Campigotto, born in Venice 1962, is primarily famous for taking photos of his own native city. He’s well-renowned for both his rural and urban scenery.

What makes Campigotto so unique is the way he photos his images at night, especially in beautiful Venice.

He’s simply marvelous at capturing the tranquil dark water on a slow shutter speed against the elaborate, ashen stone facades of the some of the world’s most ancient architecture.

Campigotto boasts a massive portfolio derived from his travels to many continents. His acclaimed photographic anthology can be found in several public and private collections.

He is by far one of the world’s most favorite and famous landscape photographers today.

Charlie Waite

Charlie Waite is an icon among famous landscape photographers working today. He has a massive fan base, likely due to the way his photos have a calming effect on people.

His photos convey a deep sense of tranquility and order about them combined with vibrant colors and striking light. His work has a distinctive, mysterious quality about it.

If the chance ever presents itself, go and see his amazing work – it’s worth the trip.

David Muench

David Muench is yet another one of the famous landscape photographers on this list. Muench is drawn to the great American West and has created some very famous photos in over 50 books.

His panoramic imagery features an amazing color palette along with lovely classical works of art. Photography must be a natural way of life for the Muench family since his father was a gifted landscape photographer and his own son as well.

Perhaps someday the entire family will be known as famous landscape photographers.

Jim Brandenburg

7. Jim Brandenburg

Jim Brandenburg started out as a regional photojournalist before embarking on a career with National Geographic. Like several of the famous landscape photographers here on this list, he’s a passionate and devoted environmentalist.

Most of his creations highlight both landscapes and wildlife, which obviously reflects his concern over the world’s natural environment.

Some of Brandenburg’s accomplishments include his bestselling book – “White Wolf”, which depicts amazing photos of wolves from Ellesmere Island, and his award for Magazine Photographer of the Year.

His gallery collection is a must see for anyone.

Annie Griffiths

8. Annie Griffiths

The one and only female listed among these famous landscape photographers is the incomparable, Annie Griffiths. She also studied photojournalism and started her career very early on with National Geographic.

Griffiths’ photography is unique in that it captures the most unspoiled and inspiring locations from all over the world, which makes her work an ideal match for the specific purpose and style of National Geographic.

Many of her extraordinary shots are taken from an aerial point of view, which makes for some very remarkable compositions.

Obviously there are many more famous landscape photographers – too many to mention here. There are lots of less famous artists as well, and worth looking into.

Photography is a world that will never cease to fascinate, entertain, inspire, and pique the interest in the eye of the beholder.

Therefore, the world will always be filled with potential famous landscape photographers who will continue to amaze us with their unique vision of our planet.

“Most exciting book!”

As of today, and going through just the first 3 chapters and putting them to use right here at the gallery, my new favorite photographer is Evan Sharboneau. Your book is, without question, the most exciting book on Photography I have ever not only read, but have put to use. You are among the most creative people I know. Congratulations Evan!

“Amazingly helpful…”

Every detail from beginning to end was a wonderful insight into this art. It's laid out in a way where it eases you into light photography without bombarding you with technical and complicated terms and processes, having said that you can always look at the techniques *in detail if you wish. Thanks for shedding some light into my lens!
